Ravens DT Michael Pierce Determined to Avoid Becoming a Meme After Game-Saving Interception

The Ravens’ dominant win over the Browns on Saturday was all but secured when the game’s most unforgettable moment unfolded late in the fourth quarter.

With Baltimore leading 35-10, Cleveland was driving deep into Ravens territory, hoping to score a touchdown that would only impact the betting lines. Their efforts were cut short by Ravens defensive tackle Michael Pierce, who delivered a play that will be remembered for reasons beyond the game’s outcome.

Pierce, a 355-pound lineman, unexpectedly found himself in pass coverage when Browns quarterback Bailey Zappe threw a pass straight to him near the Ravens’ 16-yard line. Seizing the moment, Pierce intercepted the ball and began rumbling forward as if contemplating a historic big-man touchdown. However, just a few yards later, he opted for a cautious—and somewhat comedic—slide to give himself up.

“There’s a long history of big-guy interceptions and fumbles turning into memes,” Pierce said afterward in the locker room. “At the risk of ruining a career-play like that for myself, it was time to go home. The bus was out of gas.”

When asked what was going through his mind as the ball came his way, Pierce couldn’t help but laugh.

“I’ll be honest—I don’t want to curse on TV—but it was like, ‘Oh s-word! Oh my god, he really threw this football,’” Pierce recalled. “I’ve got fairly decent hands, so I’m glad I caught it. But coach always preaches smart football. I didn’t want to end up as a meme on Instagram, with my wife and everybody laughing at me. So, we did the right thing: got down and kept it moving.”

Pierce’s interception sparked wild celebrations on the Ravens’ sideline and in the stands at M&T Bank Stadium. The team will aim to keep that momentum going as they prepare to host a playoff game next weekend.
