Kentucky Basketball Tops Florida: Wildcats Hand Gators First Loss of Season in SEC Opener
LEXINGTON — Florida basketball entered Saturday's SEC opener with a perfect 13-0 record, relying on their dominant rebounding to fuel their offense. Ranked as the nation's best on the boards, the Gators averaged nearly 20 points per game in transition, which ranked second nationally.
In their matchup with Kentucky, Florida maintained its rebounding dominance, winning the battle 38-30. However, the Wildcats proved to be the better team overall.
Slowing down the Gators' fast-break attack, Kentucky secured a thrilling 106-100 victory at Rupp Arena. This marked the SEC debut for first-year Kentucky head coach Mark Pope, who saw his team hand Florida (13-1, 0-1 SEC) its first loss of the season.
The game was a matchup between ranked teams, with Kentucky entering at No. 11 in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll and Florida sitting at No. 5. The Wildcats (12-2, 1-0 SEC) gave a strong performance under their new coach, frustrating Florida's offense by limiting their transition opportunities. The Gators managed only three fast-break points in the entire game.
Kentucky's offensive efficiency played a big part in keeping Florida from getting into transition. The Wildcats shot a blistering 57.8% from the field (37-of-64), the best performance by a Florida opponent this season. Florida's previous highest opponent shooting percentage was 45.8%, recorded by North Carolina in a 90-84 loss to the Gators last month.
From beyond the arc, Kentucky was equally effective, hitting 48% of their three-point attempts (14-of-29). Koby Brea was the standout from deep, knocking down seven of nine three-pointers for a team-high 23 points off the bench. Teammates Andrew Carr and Jaxson Robinson also contributed two three-pointers apiece.
The win handed Florida its first loss of the season and showed Kentucky's defensive and offensive prowess in a high-paced battle.
