**Trump’s Latest Cabinet Pick, Linda McMahon, Faces Scrutiny Over Past Allegations**
Proximity to scandal seems to be a recurring theme for President-elect Donald Trump’s Cabinet selections. On Tuesday, Trump announced his intention to nominate former World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) CEO Linda McMahon as Secretary of Education, raising eyebrows and sparking controversy.
McMahon, alongside her husband Vince McMahon, played a pivotal role in transforming WWE into a cultural powerhouse. Trump’s ties to the McMahons date back to his participation in WWE’s 2007 “Battle of the Billionaires,” a highly publicized storyline that underscored their close relationship.
After stepping away from WWE in 2009, McMahon entered conservative politics, serving briefly on the Connecticut State Board of Education and running two unsuccessful Senate campaigns. She later became a major Republican donor and served as Administrator of the Small Business Administration during Trump’s first term.
In his announcement, Trump praised McMahon’s experience in leadership and business, stating:
“Linda will use her decades of leadership experience and deep understanding of both education and business to empower the next generation of American students and workers, making America Number One in Education in the world.”
However, McMahon’s nomination comes with significant baggage. During her tenure as WWE CEO, the organization faced allegations of fostering a toxic work environment. More troublingly, Linda and Vince McMahon are being sued by five anonymous plaintiffs who claim they were sexually abused as teenage “ring boys” by WWE employees, including wrestlers Pat Patterson and Terry Garvin. The plaintiffs allege that the McMahons were aware of the abuse but failed to take meaningful action. Vince McMahon is also facing separate allegations of sexual assault and misconduct during the period when Linda held a leadership role in the company.
Additionally, McMahon has faced criticism for inaccuracies in her professional history. In 2009, she falsely claimed to have a bachelor’s degree in education on a candidate questionnaire for the Connecticut Board of Education. When the discrepancy was discovered, she resigned, though she insisted the timing was unrelated.
If confirmed, McMahon would be tasked with implementing Trump’s controversial education agenda, which includes significantly reducing the Department of Education’s influence and shifting education policy back to the states. However, the scandals surrounding her past and her role in WWE may complicate her path to confirmation.
