George Strait took center stage at the 2024 CMA Awards to accept the prestigious Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award, delivering a heartfelt speech filled with gratitude and reflection.
Following a series of tribute performances by stars like Miranda Lambert and Chris Stapleton, the 72-year-old country legend expressed appreciation for his fans, family, and the industry. He also gave a special shoutout to his wife of nearly 53 years, Norma Strait.
"I want to thank the CMAs for adding me to this list of incredible artists associated with the name Willie Nelson," Strait said. "I’m grateful to all the amazing artists who performed songs I’ve been lucky to record over the years. Hearing y’all sing them is truly special—I’m glad I got to them first!"
He went on to acknowledge his family members in the audience, including his wife Norma, their son Bubba, daughter-in-law Tamara, and grandchildren Jilliann and Harvey. "It’s wonderful having you all here," he said. "But especially Norma, who’s been by my side for just shy of 53 incredible years."
During his speech, Strait paid homage to key figures in his life who passed away this year, including his longtime manager Erv Woolsey, road manager Tom Foote, and fiddle player Gene Elders. He also thanked Jesus, his fans, his record label, and his band for their support throughout his extraordinary career.
The evening was marked by stunning performances honoring Strait’s legacy. Lainey Wilson opened with "Amarillo By Morning," Jamey Johnson followed with "Give It Away," and Miranda Lambert and Parker McCollum delivered a duet of "Troubadour." Strait later joined Chris Stapleton on stage for "Honky Tonk Hall of Fame," ending the tribute with a rousing "Cheers, brother!"
Strait’s career milestones speak for themselves. With over 30 platinum or multi-platinum albums, 60 No. 1 hits, and a record-breaking concert attended by over 110,000 fans earlier this year, the "King of Country" remains a towering figure in the genre.
Since debuting in 1981, Strait has won 17 CMA Awards from 83 nominations—the most in the event’s history. He has also earned 16 Grammy nominations, winning Best Country Album in 2008 for Troubadour.
Reflecting on the significance of the award, CMA CEO Sarah Trahern described Strait as "authentically Texas and authentically Country," calling him an inspiration to artists everywhere.
The Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award, first introduced in 2012, has previously been awarded to icons like Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, and Loretta Lynn. Strait joins this elite group, cementing his place as one of country music’s all-time greats.
The 58th Annual CMA Awards aired live from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on Nov. 20 and will stream on Hulu starting Nov. 21.
