Arizona State wasn’t expected to be here. Predicted to finish near the bottom of the Big 12 under second-year coach Kenny Dillingham, the Sun Devils defied expectations by storming through their conference, claiming the championship, and nearly toppling one of college football’s blue bloods.
Cam Skattebo was the heartbeat of this team—a relentless force on the field. Standing at 5-foot-11 and 215 pounds, Skattebo doesn’t rely on speed; he plows through defenders with raw power. On Wednesday at the Peach Bowl, Skattebo delivered again, rushing for 143 yards and two touchdowns, adding 99 receiving yards (74 after the catch), and even throwing a 42-yard touchdown pass. Whenever Arizona State needed a spark, Skattebo provided it, refusing to let his team fall without a fight.
“We fought through everything all season,” Skattebo said after the game, flanked by head coach Dillingham and quarterback Sam Leavitt. “I bet you nobody in this room thought we were going to be close when we went down 17-3 in that first quarter… but everyone on this team believes in each other, and that’s what kept us going.”
That belief, combined with Skattebo’s extraordinary ability, proved unstoppable. Early in the game, he struggled with hydration, admitting he "threw up" after drinking too much water too quickly. But even his setbacks were remarkable—Skattebo rallied, as always.
“Puke and rally,” Dillingham said with a laugh, adding, “Cam’s a special player. You give him the ball, crazy things happen.”
Though Skattebo’s time at Arizona State is over, he’s poised for the NFL Draft, where his rise from a lightly regarded recruit to a game-changer has already left a lasting mark. Draft experts may not project him as a first-rounder, but his journey speaks volumes.
“Us three right here, we got a long life ahead of us,” Skattebo said, motioning to Dillingham and Leavitt. “This is just the beginning for us. No matter what, these guys will be in my life forever. So it's awesome that I was able to play football for and with them.”
