India Reports No Unusual Spike in Influenza-Like Cases Amid HMPV Surge in China
New Delhi: The ongoing flu season in China, which has seen a rise in cases of the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), is not considered unusual, according to a joint monitoring group led by India’s Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). The group, which convened in Delhi today, attributed the surge in China to seasonal pathogens such as the influenza virus, RSV, and HMPV.

The meeting brought together experts from organizations including the World Health Organization (WHO), Disaster Management Cell, Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Emergency Medical Relief Division, and AIIMS-Delhi.
Surveillance and Findings
The Indian government emphasized that robust surveillance systems for influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory illness (SARI) are already operational through the ICMR and IDSP networks. Recent data from these systems indicate no unusual surge in respiratory illness cases beyond expected seasonal variations.
Physicians across hospitals have also confirmed no significant rise in respiratory illnesses in recent weeks. Testing for other respiratory pathogens, including HMPV, adenovirus, and RSV, has shown no unexpected increase in positivity rates.
Precautionary Measures
To strengthen preparedness, the ICMR plans to enhance the number of laboratories testing for HMPV and will monitor trends year-round. Data from recent nationwide preparedness drills indicate that India is well-equipped to handle any potential increase in respiratory illnesses.
The government is actively monitoring the situation in China and has requested timely updates from the WHO.
Expert Opinions and Public Reassurance
Dr. Atul Goel, a senior DGHS official, reassured the public, stating, “There is nothing alarming about the current situation. General precautions against respiratory infections remain sufficient.”
He explained that HMPV, much like other respiratory viruses, typically causes mild cold-like symptoms. While the very young and very old may experience flu-like symptoms, there is no specific antiviral treatment for HMPV, making prevention crucial.
Dr. Goel also clarified that respiratory outbreaks in India during December 2024 did not show a substantial increase. Hospitals remain prepared for the usual seasonal rise in respiratory infections with adequate supplies and bed capacity.
