Justin Trudeau Steps Down as Canadian Prime Minister and Liberal Party Leader
After nearly a decade in power, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation as the leader of the ruling Liberal Party, declaring, "I have fought for this country, for you."
At a press conference outside Rideau Cottage in Ottawa, Trudeau reflected on his premiership, emphasizing the resilience and determination of Canadians as his source of inspiration. “Every morning I’ve woken up inspired by the resilience, generosity, and determination of Canadians,” he said. Trudeau highlighted his administration's key achievements, including its response to the COVID-19 pandemic, unwavering support for Ukraine, and ambitious climate change initiatives.
“We rallied together during the pandemic, stood firm with Ukraine in defense of democracy, confronted climate change, and prepared our economy for the challenges ahead,” he noted. “We are at a critical moment in the world.”
Trudeau's "One Regret"
Trudeau also expressed regret about not reforming Canada’s electoral system during his tenure.
“If I have one regret, it’s that we couldn’t change how we elect our governments,” he remarked. “I wish Canadians had the ability to rank their choices on a single ballot, selecting a second or third preference.”
Transition of Leadership
Trudeau confirmed that he will remain in office as prime minister in a caretaker capacity until the Liberal Party elects a new leader. To facilitate this transition, Parliament will be suspended until March 24.
“This morning, I advised the Governor General that a new session of parliament is needed,” Trudeau stated. “The House will be prorogued until March 24.”

The announcement comes amid mounting political challenges for Trudeau and the Liberal Party, including plummeting poll numbers and rising support for the opposition Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre. Political analysts view Trudeau’s decision as a strategic move ahead of a general election expected later this year, one the Liberals are forecasted to lose.

The son of former Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau, Justin Trudeau entered federal politics in 2008 and became leader of the Liberal Party in 2013.
