Donald Trump Jr. Arrives in Greenland Following Father's Comments on U.S. Control
Donald Trump Jr. has arrived in Greenland, two weeks after his father, President-elect Donald Trump, reiterated his interest in the U.S. taking control of the autonomous Danish territory.
Ahead of his arrival in Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, Trump Jr. described the trip as a “personal day-trip” to speak with the local people, clarifying that he had no formal meetings planned with government officials.
The U.S. President-elect sparked controversy when he recently stated that "ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity" for U.S. national security. Greenland’s Prime Minister, Mute Egede, firmly rejected the suggestion, stating, "We are not for sale. Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland." However, he encouraged Greenlanders to consider further steps toward independence.
Greenland, with a population of just 57,000, enjoys considerable autonomy, though it remains financially dependent on subsidies from Denmark and is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. During his presidency, Donald Trump had previously expressed interest in buying the island, but was met with a strong rebuff then, as well as now.
In response to Trump Jr.'s visit, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told Danish TV, "Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders," emphasizing that only the local population could determine their future. While she reiterated that Greenland is not for sale, she stressed the importance of close cooperation between Denmark and the U.S., a NATO ally.
Greenland's Prime Minister had been scheduled to meet with King Frederik in Copenhagen, but the meeting was postponed due to what Egede referred to as "calendar gymnastics." Despite this, reports suggest the Prime Minister still planned to travel to Copenhagen.
Some opposition politicians in Denmark have expressed frustration over the Danish government’s response to Trump Jr.’s visit. Conservative MP Rasmus Jarlov criticized the gesture as disrespectful toward Denmark’s loyal allies and friends.
After his arrival, President-elect Trump shared a post on his Truth Social platform expressing enthusiasm for the reception his son received in Nuuk, alongside images of Trump Jr. with attendees wearing Make America Great Again hats. Trump Jr. declared, “Greenland and the Free World, need safety, security, strength, and peace!” and added, “Make Greenland great again!”
Before departing aboard his father’s private jet, Trump Jr. clarified on his podcast Triggered that he had no intention of buying Greenland, although he expressed his affection for the island.
The President-elect’s eldest son had a prominent role in the 2024 U.S. election campaign, regularly participating in rallies and media appearances. In one of his social media posts, a video featured an unnamed Greenlander in a red MAGA hat, urging Trump to buy Greenland and free it from what he described as Denmark’s "colonization." The man’s identity remains unclear, though Danish media reported he had a past drug conviction.
Greenland, situated on the shortest route between North America and Europe, holds strategic importance for the U.S., particularly due to its American military and space facilities.
In response to Trump’s recent remarks, the Danish government announced a significant defense spending increase for Greenland, with Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen pointing out the "irony" of the timing.
Meanwhile, King Frederik X of Denmark recently altered the royal coat of arms to give more prominence to Greenland and the Faroe Islands, a move seen by some as a rebuke to Trump’s comments. In his New Year’s address, King Frederik emphasized the unity of the Kingdom of Denmark, including Greenland, but Greenland's Prime Minister used his own speech to call for the island to break free from "the shackles of colonialism."
Trump’s interest in Greenland is not unprecedented. The idea of the U.S. purchasing the island was first proposed by U.S. President Andrew Johnson in the 1860s. Separately, Trump has also raised concerns over Panama's control of the Panama Canal, threatening to reassert U.S. control over the vital waterway. Panama’s president rejected the notion, declaring, "every square meter" of the canal belongs to Panama.
As discussions continue, Greenland remains steadfast in its position: the island is not for sale.
