Arsenal narrowed the gap to Premier League leaders Liverpool to six points with a 3-1 comeback victory over Brentford on Wednesday, powered by Gabriel Jesus' red-hot form.
Mikel Arteta's side faced an early setback when Bryan Mbeumo struck for Brentford in the first half at the Gtech Community Stadium.
However, Arsenal weathered the storm on a wet and blustery evening in west London, with Jesus equalizing before halftime. The Brazilian has now netted six goals in his last four matches, a stark turnaround after managing just one goal in his first 20 games this season.
Quick-fire strikes from Mikel Merino and Gabriel Martinelli early in the second half sealed the victory, lifting Arsenal to second place above Nottingham Forest.
"We won in a tough stadium against a very strong opponent," Arteta said. "Their record here is incredible, and going 1-0 down made it even harder. But we stayed patient, managed the situation emotionally, and were clinical when it mattered. Jesus’ form has been crucial."
Before this match, Arsenal had struggled for consistency, with lackluster draws against Fulham and Everton and a narrow win over Ipswich following their 5-1 thrashing of Crystal Palace. This performance, however, suggests the Gunners are ready to challenge Liverpool, who still hold a game in hand.
Arsenal remain unbeaten in their last 12 games across all competitions, a streak that now includes four consecutive wins. "We can only focus on winning our next match and see where that takes us. It’s not in our hands," Arteta added.
With Bukayo Saka sidelined due to a hamstring injury, 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri made his first league start. Although Kai Havertz was unavailable after scoring the winner against Ipswich, Jesus ensured his absence went unnoticed.
Brentford Strike First
Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya, returning to face his former club, endured a rough start as Brentford capitalized on their first serious attack in the 13th minute.
After Martin Odegaard lost possession, Mikkel Damsgaard found Mbeumo, who cut inside Riccardo Calafiori and unleashed a low shot. Raya, reacting sluggishly, allowed the ball to sneak in at the near post, prompting jeers from the Brentford faithful.
Raya nearly compounded his woes moments later, fumbling an Mbeumo strike before clawing it off the line just in time.
Arsenal's Response
The Gunners regrouped and equalized in the 29th minute. Thomas Partey’s powerful strike from the edge of the area was parried by Brentford keeper Mark Flekken, but Jesus reacted quickest, diving to head home the rebound from six yards.
Despite suffering a bloodied mouth in a clash with Damsgaard, Jesus remained undeterred.
Arsenal struck again five minutes into the second half through a set piece. Nwaneri's corner caused chaos in the box, and after Jesus' effort deflected toward Merino, the Spanish midfielder poked it into the net.
Merino’s second goal since joining Arsenal shattered Brentford’s resolve. Moments later, Nwaneri showcased his creativity with a clever cutback that eventually found Martinelli, who curled a brilliant shot past Flekken to seal the win.
