Funeral Services for Former President Jimmy Carter: A Detailed Schedule
WASHINGTON (AP) — Funeral services for former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away Sunday at the age of 100, will be held in Georgia and Washington, D.C., from Saturday, Jan. 4, through Thursday, Jan. 9. Below is the complete schedule of events as provided by the Joint Task Force-National Capital Region. All times are in Eastern Standard Time.
Saturday, Jan. 4
- 10:15 a.m.: The state funeral begins as the Carter family arrives at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Georgia. Current and former Secret Service agents will escort Carter’s remains to the hearse.
- 10:50 a.m.: The motorcade will pause briefly in Carter’s hometown of Plains, Georgia, at his family’s farm. The National Park Service will ring the historic farm bell 39 times in his honor.
- 3:00 p.m.: The motorcade arrives at Georgia's State Capitol for a moment of silence.
- 3:45 p.m.: Carter's remains are transported to the Carter Presidential Center for an arrival ceremony.
- 4:00 p.m.: A service is held at the Presidential Center.
- 7:00 p.m.: Carter lies in repose, allowing mourners to pay their respects.
Sunday, Jan. 5 – Monday, Jan. 6
- Carter continues to lie in repose at the Carter Presidential Center.
Tuesday, Jan. 7
- 9:30 a.m.: Carter’s remains depart the Carter Presidential Center.
- 10:40 a.m.: The Carter family boards Special Air Mission 39 at Dobbins Air Reserve Base, Georgia, bound for Washington, D.C.
- 12:45 p.m.: Upon arrival at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, Carter’s remains are ceremonially transferred to a hearse.
- 1:15 p.m.: The motorcade travels to the U.S. Navy Memorial. There, Carter’s remains are transferred to a horse-drawn caisson for a funeral procession to the U.S. Capitol.
- 3:00 p.m.: In the Capitol Rotunda, members of Congress pay their respects during a ceremony.
- 7:00 p.m. to Midnight: Carter lies in state, with the public invited to pay their respects.
Wednesday, Jan. 8
- Carter continues to lie in state at the Capitol Rotunda.
Thursday, Jan. 9
- 9:00 a.m.: Carter’s remains depart the U.S. Capitol.
- 9:30 a.m.: Arrival ceremony at Washington National Cathedral, followed by the National Funeral Service at 10:00 a.m.
- 11:45 a.m.: The Carter family boards Special Air Mission 39 at Joint Base Andrews for the return to Georgia.
- 2:00 p.m.: Special Air Mission 39 lands at Lawson Army Airfield, Fort Moore, Georgia. Carter’s remains are ceremonially transferred to the hearse.
- 3:30 p.m.: Arrival at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia, for a private funeral service.
- 4:45 p.m.: The motorcade proceeds to the Carter residence for a private interment at 5:20 p.m.
- Before the interment, the U.S. Navy will perform a missing man formation flyover in honor of Carter’s naval service and tenure as commander-in-chief. The public is invited to line the motorcade route through Plains to pay their respects as Carter is laid to rest.
