Trump Nominates Pam Bondi for Attorney General After Gaetz Withdraws
WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump announced Thursday that he will nominate former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi to lead the Justice Department. This decision comes after his initial choice, Matt Gaetz, withdrew amid ongoing scrutiny over sex trafficking allegations.
Bondi, a long-time Trump ally, previously served as one of his defense lawyers during his first impeachment trial. She has also supported Trump publicly, including attending his New York hush money trial, which concluded with his conviction on 34 felony counts.
“For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponized against me and other Republicans — not anymore,” Trump declared on social media. “Pam will refocus the DOJ on its true mission: fighting crime and making America safe again.”
Gaetz stepped down from consideration after controversy surrounding a federal sex trafficking investigation raised doubts about his confirmation prospects. Although he denied all allegations, Gaetz's limited legal experience and the scandal drew criticism from within the Justice Department. Bondi, by contrast, brings years of legal experience and a reputation for staunch loyalty—qualities Trump values highly.
Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr., indicated that the transition team had backup candidates ready for controversial nominations. Bondi’s selection follows a pattern of Trump prioritizing loyalty in his appointments, reflecting his broader efforts to reshape the DOJ’s focus.
If confirmed by the Republican-led Senate, Bondi is expected to be a key figure in Trump's cabinet, overseeing significant shifts in civil rights enforcement and handling cases related to the January 6 Capitol riots. Republicans like Senator Lindsey Graham predict a smooth confirmation process, praising Bondi as an excellent choice.
However, Bondi has faced previous controversies, including allegations of a campaign donation-related conflict of interest in 2013, though the case was later dismissed. Critics also recall her request to delay a state execution for a fundraiser, for which she later apologized.
Bondi’s leadership could signal a dramatic realignment of the Justice Department’s priorities, reflecting Trump’s vision and his ongoing battle with what he calls a politicized legal system.
