Blake Snell has officially joined the Dodgers, securing a five-year, $182 million deal as the first top-10 free agent to sign this offseason. The defending World Series champions are banking on Snell to become their ace—provided he stays healthy.
Snell enters this contract after an injury-shortened season with the Giants, where he made just 20 starts and pitched 104 innings. Despite durability concerns—he's qualified for the ERA title only twice in seven full seasons—Snell delivered a stellar second half in 2024. Returning from two IL stints, he dominated from July onward, posting a 1.77 FIP, 80 innings, 114 strikeouts, and a .203 BABIP. He even recorded his first career no-hitter during this stretch.
Known for his dynamic repertoire, Snell features a 95-97 mph fastball, a devastating curveball (ranked fifth-most valuable by Statcast), and an effective changeup. His curveball's impact is especially notable; despite fewer throws, it outperformed nearly all others. Unlike many Dodgers acquisitions, Snell doesn't need a pitch-design overhaul, fitting seamlessly into their rotation.
However, his durability remains a question mark. Snell has surpassed 130 innings only twice, both times earning Cy Young Awards. His history of adductor strains and other injuries—though not arm-related—suggests a high-risk, high-reward investment.
The Dodgers’ rotation is already fragile. Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Tyler Glasnow, and Shohei Ohtani all bring talent but health concerns. With other options like Landon Knack and Bobby Miller also unproven, Snell's addition bolsters depth but doesn't resolve uncertainty.
This deal sets a high bar for free agents like Corbin Burnes and Max Fried, who may command similar paydays.
